Personally, when I play Sims 3, I make a sim and try and make a happy, functional family.
What do you guys do? Do you try for 50 generations? Do you try and kill as many sims as possible? Do you make them miserable?

I like to make my Sims happy too.
That is why I have not been able to do a legacy as of yet. After the children are born, I hate to have them go without! I haven't had the patience to follow one family through the generations.

I haven't had the patience to follow one family through the generations. That's my problem! I always start my legacies off with the best of intentions and then I just... get bored and stop. I think the furthest I've ever gotten is...Generation two.

This is my first serious Legacy, too! I know with you guys backing me up I can finish it.
I like to make my sims happy. i tried to kill a sim once while I still had the Sims 2, but I only ended up killing EVERY OTHER SIM IN THE HOUSEHOLD EXCEPT HIM. I was so sad. D: I couldn't even turn off the game and restart. ; n; I will never try to kill a sim again.

When I create a sim (or family) I try to make them as happy as possible. Usually I just go based on their wishes, however I also tend to micro-manage them to make sure they are not getting themselves in trouble or their needs get to low.
The farthest I have ever gotten in a legacy challenge was Generation 7. It was a challenge that my husband and I were playing together. It was also the only challenge that I have ever killed a sim in. Cycl0n3 Sw0rd married our Generation 2 heiress. At the time we married him in, he looked like he was about the same age as our heiress despite him being in the game since our Founder moved in. After getting him into the household, we found out that he was about five days from becoming an elder. Not what we had planned and no time to finish his LTW. They ended up having three triplet girls, but because he wasn't really much use afterwards, we built a pool and trapped him inside. Although a good thing came from his death (our heiress went on to have our first and only ghost sim), I haven't been able to kill a sim since.
Currently I am playing a 100 Baby Challenge. Although it's a lot of work, I really love seeing how the game mixes different genetics.
